Jacob Adriaensz. Backer (1608 - 1651)

Dutch Golden Age painter

Jacob Backer grew up in a Mennonite environment in Amsterdam as the son of a baker. Around 1626 he went to Leeuwarden, where he was apprenticed to the history painter Lambert Jacobsz. at the same time as Govert Flinck. In 1632 Backer returned to Amsterdam and his earliest dated painting is from that year. Backer is usually considered as part of Rembrandt's circle, they may have had contact through the Mennonite art dealer Hendrick Uylenburgh. Backer painted portraits, group portraits and history pieces, primarily in the tradition of Rubens and the Utrecht Caravaggisti.
