Pieter Aertsen was trained in Amsterdam by Allart Claesz and in 1535 he became a master of the St. Luke's Guild in Antwerp. In 1542 he married Katelijn Beuckelaer, the aunt of Joachim Beuckelaer, who later became his pupil. Aertsen's three sons Pieter, Aert and Dirck, were probably also his pupils, as was Johannes Stradanus. Around 1557 Aertsen returned to Amsterdam, perhaps in connection with important religious commissions. In addition to a number noteworthy altarpieces, Aertsen painted market scenes, town views, and still lifes, often with a biblical scene in the background. In his own time Aertsen was usally called 'Lange Pier' (tall Peter), because he was so tall.
