Provenance
Purchased by Edward John Fairbrother, merchant for The East India Company. He felt drawn to the painting because the sitter reminded him of his late wife Annie Fairbrother who had died young. Years later when his house caught fire and was burnt to the ground this painting was the only thing which survived; rescued by the gardener who went into the burning building to secure that which he knew his master valued most
