sold by Lord Wharncliffe to J. Smith in 1841 from whom bought by Lord Francis Egerton, who became Earl of Ellesmere in 1846
thence by inheritance to John, 5th Earl of Ellesmere (later 6th Duke of Sutherland in 1963), who placed the work on loan at the National Gallery of Scotland in 1946
